FAQs
HOURS
Q - How many service hours do I need each school year?
A - In total, each member must complete 60 service hours per year. 20 of the hours must be NHS-sanctioned events (NHS Hours) and the other 40 must be any other service projects that you'd turn into guidance at school (Regular Hours). It is recommended to submit 5 NHS Hours per quarter and 10 Regular Hours per quarter.
Q - Can I do more than 20 NHS Hours?
A - Absolutely! Any NHS Hours that you earn after the 20-Hour requirement will count toward your Regular Hours.
Q - How do I turn in hours?
A - Hours will be turned in at the end of each QUARTER as a Canvas Submission, and all the Quarter Submissions can be found in the "Hour Log Submissions" module in Canvas.
Q - How does NHS see the hours I turn into guidance to count as my regular hours?
A - We don't. That's why you MUST submit ALL of your hours on Canvas so we can verify that you have completed your Regular Hour requirements.
Q - Can I lose hours that I've already gotten? If yes, what makes me lose them?
A - Yes, MSD NHS is allowed to dock hours for doing any of the following things: (1) Showing up to After School Tutoring without the After-School Form or (2) Missing an event that you signed up for with no notice or replacement. Both of those will result in the docking of 1 NHS Hour.
-
NOTE: The After-School Form is only needed once! Bring it to the first NHS event you attend this year and you are good for the year for all other activities
Q - Where can I find the Hour Opportunities for this month?
A - All our Service Hour Opportunities for the month can be found in Modules of the NHS Canvas Page. If you are not in the Canvas page, please email us at MSDNationalHonorSociety@gmail.com and include your name, grade, and 06 number in the email. Our Officer Team will then get you added as soon as possible.
MEETINGS & VOLUNTEERING
Q - When are the meetings for NHS?
A - Meetings are held at MSD on Mondays either in the Auditorium or Media Center. Because all the meetings are NOT the first Monday of the month, please check all the meeting dates in Canvas under the "Welcome to MSD NHS" module.
Q - Where can I find the meeting PowerPoints after the meeting ends?
A - Our Officer Team will post the meeting PPTs on Canvas in the "Meeting Dates 25-26" page, which can be found in the "Welcome to MSD NHS" module.
Q - When do I volunteer?
A - Volunteering and service projects are held all throughout the year. There is no limit to the amount you can volunteer or serve, but you must meet the hour requirements. Check the "Hour Opportunities" Module for all the information.
Q - What if I have an idea for a service project?
A - Great! Reach out to our Officer Team, which can be found HERE. We will work with you to try to make your project a reality. The same goes for if you have a connection with an organization.
MEMBERSHIP
Q - How do I become an NHS Member?
A - Starting your sophomore year, if you meet the requirements of membership, you will be sent a letter of interest which will guide you on the application process to NHS. If you decide not to join your sophomore year, another letter will be given junior year.
Q - If I was in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) in middle school, am I automatically a member?
A - No. While we do appreciate community service at all ages, to be an NHS member, you must be at least sophomore that meets all membership requirements.
Q - What are the requirements for membership?
A - To be considered for NHS membership, you must have at least 30 submitted service hours by the end of the first semester of your sophomore year as well as an unweighted GPA of 3.2. Once you receive your letter of interest, it will detail the further requirements for membership as you apply.
